Sand Trap Tips And Tecniques

Following are some tips to help improve your golf game.
Visual imagery is commom in bunker play. Some instructors tell students to imagine that the face of the club is the palm of their hands, which they "slap" under the ball in the hitting zone. We prefer to think of money. A dollar bill is slightly more than six inches long. That means that if the bill is laid under a golf ball, about two inches of the ball would protrude back from the bill. As the ideal "explosion shot" demands that you hit into the sand roughly two inches behind the ball, you should pretend that you're hitting the dollar ball out of the bunker. This is an especially useful image because in order to hit the ball right out of the bunker, you'll need to complete your follow-through, and that's another important element of just about every sand shot.
The longer bunker shot is one of the easiest shots to play and one of the most satisfying in the is entire game. Here are the six fundamentals of the bunker shot:
1. Choke down on the grip of the club to compensate for having to dig your feet into the sand to anchor your body.
2. Do not move the legs during a swing.
3. Take two or sometimes three extra clubs to make up for distance loss by the arms-and-hands-only swing. If you're within reach of the green, take as much club as you'll need for the ball to land near the hole. Because you're hitting down in to the back of the ball, the ball should have enough spin on it to stop quickly.
4. Play the ball in the middle of your stance so you can make contact before the bottom of your swing arc.
5. Always hit the ball first.
6. Don't ground your club. That's a two-stroke penalty.
The delicate explosion shot [where you see a puff of sand and the ball flies to the hole and stops on a dime] is tough to hit consistently. Most attempts see the ball rolling more than expected. So why not anticipate the roll and play for it? The idea is to take the spin out of the shot by hitting even farther behind the ball than usual [three or four inches is recommended] and compensating for the removal of power by making a full swing. Your ball will explode out of the sand but will roll a good three or four yards.
Once you have a feel for the basics of playing from sand, you can easily understand some of the finer points of bunker play, and you will find it easy to adapt your technique to different types of sand challenges and lies. Make your golf game more enjoyable with good sand play.

The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag.

Tip when buying used golf clubs: On metal woods, alloy heads are more susceptible to the effects of play and aging than steel heads. This is because most alloy heads contain the softer aluminum. Also, when buying used, stick to better known brand names. Lesser known names aren't necessarily worse clubs when used, but the craftsmanship that goes into, for example, Titleist, should carry over to used clubs, as well.

Some of the names among the 8,390 entries for the U.S. Open might look familiar - Norman, O'Meara, Cook and Weiskopf.
In most cases, it's the sons of PGA Tour players.
The sons of four major champions and at least three other PGA Tour winners were among the 8,390 entries for the U.S. Open, the second-lowest amount this decade. The U.S. Open will be held June 12-15 at Torrey Pines, a municipal course in San Diego and home of the Buick Invitational.
